File Scavenger™ can undelete files on an NTFS partition on a Windows XP®, Windows 2000® or Windows NT® computer if the disk areas allocated to the files have not been reused. It may work even after the disk has been reformatted.

To run File Scavenger™ you must log on to a Windows computer as a system administrator. File Scavenger™ works on local NTFS partitions. The program and associated libraries can fit onto a single floppy disk. (Note that even if you have File Scavenger™ on a floppy disk, you still must boot up to Windows XP/2000/NT® on your computer before you can run this utility.)

Disclaimer: Files can only be restored under certain conditions, such as the disk areas allocated to the files have not been overwritten. When a file is restored, there is no guarantee that the content of the recovered file is the same as the original. It is your responsibility to validate that the data are intact prior to using them.

• Important Notice: The safest way to install File Scanvenger after you have already deleted your files:
  • First, stop any activities that may write to the drive where the files were on. If the drive contains Windows NT or the page file, the deleted files may be written over any time. In this case you may have to shutdown your computer, remove the drive and install it on another computer.
  • Download the floppy version of File Scavenger to a second computer.
  • Extract the files on the second computer. Copy the extracted files to a floppy disk.
  • Insert the floppy disk to the computer where the files were on. Run File Scavenger from the floppy drive. (Click Start, Run and type "a:\filescav.exe".)
  • Once the files have been found by File Scavenger, restore them to a different drive.
