Chapter 22: Spanned Volume Reconstruction Processes

The reconstruction process requires specifying two disk extents:

  • Extent 1: Sectors 63 to 997951 on disk 1
  • Extent 2: Sectors 63 to 997951 on disk 2

If the first sector of extent 1 is incorrectly specified (for example, as sector 0), data can still be recovered because File Scavenger® can detect and compensate for this error. If the last sector of extent 1 or the first sector of extent 2 is incorrect, all sectors on disk 2 will have incorrect offsets and only data on disk 1 will be recovered. The last sector of disk 2 can be incorrect without much effect on the recovery.

The accurate size of a disk can be determined by the following:

  • Select the disk in the File Scavenger® Look In box. Make sure to select the disk number (such as Disk 1), not the drive letter (such as D).
  • Click File, Disk Image, Create. The value in the To Sector field is the last sector number. This value plus one is the size of the disk.
The disk size is 39,856,320 sectors
