This step collects data from the disks to enable us to determine the correct recovery procedure. Only information about the
file system structure is collected. File contents are not collected. The process is as follows:
- First create a trace folder on a drive with at least several hundred megabytes of unused disk space.
- Download and install File Scavenger on the boot drive:

- Run File Scavenger. Click Advanced. (Screenshot)
- Click Striped Volume. (Screenshot)
- If the RAID is a RAID 5, click With Parity.
- Specify the number of disks. If the RAID is a RAID 5 and one disk is missing, specify the original number of disks.
- Click OK.
- In the next dialog select and add the RAID disks, one at a time. (Screenshot)
- If RAID 5 and one disk is missing, click Missing in place of the missing disk.
- Click OK when all disks have been selected.
- Click OK to accept the default block size 64 KB. (Screenshot)
- In the main dialog click Options, Trace. (Screenshot)
- Check I have read...". Browse to and select the trace folder created in a previous step. (Screenshot)
- Click OK. When asked for a trace filename, type qcctrace.txt. (Screenshot)
- In the main dialog click Long Search.
- Click Search to scan the disk
- When scanning is complete, archive all files in the trace folder into a zip file.
