Volume properties

This dialog displays the properties of the volume being considered for scanning in the Quick scan mode. If the properties are not completely known, this dialog also allows them to be defined. Note that any definitions made in this dialog are internal to File Scavenger®. No actual changes are saved to the drive.

File system

File Scavenger currently supports NTFS, FAT, FAT32, XFS, ext3, ext4, btrfs, UFS 1, UFS 2, HFS+ and HFSX.

Capacity in sectors

The total capacity of the volume measured in disk sectors. A sector is usually 512 bytes.

Starting sector

The disk sector number of the first sector of the volume. For an NTFS, FAT or FAT 32 volume this is the primary boot sector. For an XFS volume this is the primary superblock. For an ext3, ext4, UFS 1 or UFS 2 volume the primary superblock is usually located within a small offset from this sector. The actual values are 2 sectors for Ext 3 and Ext 4, 16 sectors for UFS1 and 128 sectors for UFS2. For HFS+ this is called the volume header and is located 1,024 bytes from the first byte of this sector.

I know the boot sector or superblock location.

This element is only displayed for a volume with incomplete properties. Click this to specify the location of the boot sector or superblock, including a backup boot sector or superblock. The program will display the dialog Read boot sector where you can specify the exact location.

Sector size

The disk sector size which is usually 512 but could be 4,096 bytes (4K). If you are scanning a disk image file of the drive, specify the actual sector size of the original drive, not that of the drive holding the disk image file.

Cluster size

The volume cluster or block size.

MFT or backup MFT logical cluster number.

The volume cluster number of the primary or backup MFT.

FAT 0/1 logical cluster number

The volume cluster number of the primary or backup FAT.
