Chapter 15: Overview of Hardware RAID Reconstruction

Rebuild or Reconstruct

You should understand the difference between rebuilding and reconstructing a RAID. RAID rebuilding is a risky and irreversible procedure. You use a utility, usually supplied by the RAID controller manufacturer, to restore the RAID to working order by modifying the component disks. If a mistake is made or an unexpected error occurs, you may not be able to go back to the starting state, and data may be lost permanently.

On the other hand, RAID reconstruction is a safe, read-only and repeatable procedure except for normal disk tear and wear. In this procedure, you use File Scavenger® to emulate a RAID controller. Data blocks are extracted from the individual component disks, assembled into the original data and copied to a new drive. No changes are made to the original disks. If a mistake is made or an error occurs, you can repeat the procedure or try other remedies.
