Chapter 18: Reconstruction Procedure for Software RAID

You must know the following:

  • Disk order.
  • The First Sector number, which is 63 (or 32 for some IBM disks) unless other partitions precede the RAID partition.

If the disks are from a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) device that uses a customized version of Windows®, you will also need to determine the Block Size, which may not be the default value 64 KB for software RAID.

Reconstruct the RAID

Reconstruct RAID 5

  • Start File Scavenger. Select Quick Search. Click Advanced.
  • Select Striped Volume, With Parity. Choose the number of disks.
  • Select Software-based. Select either the Windows® NT or Windows® 2000/2003/Vista parity rotation. Click OK.
  • Select the disks in the correct order. For each disk, specify the First Sector value. Click Add. Click OK after all disks have been selected.
  • Choose the Block Size of 64 KB and click OK.
  • To recover files, you need a Professional-Use license. See "Purchasing a License" in Chapter 6.
Use the Long Search if the Quick Search does not succeed.
